Dr. Alex Deegan is happy to see adult patients with any respiratory issues, including: sleep apnoea, chronic cough, investigation of breathlessness, COPD or asthma, pulmonary infections, interstitial lung disease incl. pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, pleural effusions, lung nodules, investigation/preoperative assessment of thoracic malignancies, TB screening.
A range of affordable and immediately available ambulatory sleep study options is available for patients without sufficient insurance cover for an overnight polysomnography in the sleep lab here (procedure code 2139 if you wanted to check cover with your insurance).
Dr. Deegan graduated in 1997 from University of Hamburg, Germany. As required by the German training system Dr. Deegan gained extensive experience in General Internal Medicine before completing further specialist training in Respiratory. He attained the Specialist Certificate in Internal Medicine in 2004 and in Respiratory Medicine in 2007. In July 2008 he moved to Dublin to work in a busy clinical position at St Vincent's University Hospital, where he also participated in research with Professor Walter Mc Nicholas. During this time he developed a special interest in the diagnosis and management of sleep apnea.
Since 2010 Dr Deegan has worked as a Consultant Respiratory and General Physician. After running a sleep apnea clinic alongside Professor McNicholas in St. Vincent's University Hospital for one year he took up a locum Consultant position in the Respiratory Department of St Michaels Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. Since he joined the Blackrock Clinic in 2011 he has been closely involved in setting up a state of the art Sleep Laboratory. He is performing day case bronchoscopy and EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) procedures in the Day Unit and has a special interest in management of pleural effusions including all pleural procedures. Dr. Deegan is the Clinical Director of the Respiratory and Sleep Lab.
