Dr John Gaffney was appointed as a Consultant Radiation Oncologist in 2023, and works at both the Galway Clinic and University Hospital Galway. He is fellowship trained in advanced techniques including Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR), MRLinac and Proton Beam Therapy, with sub-specialty interests in Head and Neck, Lower Gastrointestinal cancers, Skin and Oligometastases. He is an active member of the National Proton Referral Pathway and the SABR development programme in Galway.

Known for his dedication to patient care, Dr. Gaffney combines clinical excellence with a compassionate approach, ensuring his patients receive the highest quality of personalized care.

Dr Gaffney graduated from University of Galway in 2012 and completed his General Professional Training at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin in 2015.

Having acquired Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, he completed specialist training in Radiation Oncology at both University Hospital Galway and St Luke’s Radiation Oncology Network (SLRON), Dublin. He became a Fellow of the Faculty of Radiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2020.

Dr Gaffney is an active member of Cancer Trials Ireland and the Irish Research Radiation Oncology Group (IRROG). During his training, he completed a Masters in Clinical Research (MSc) at the University of Galway, publishing his work on HPV-related Oropharyngeal Cancer and oligometastases. His specialist areas of interest encompass the application of MRI in radiotherapy, adaptive radiotherapy, PROMs and oligometastases.

Since his return to Galway he has been actively involved with H&N International trials (CompARE, PRESERVE) and is principal investigator for the upcoming EORTC 2120 Ravina and NRG-HN009 trials.

He remains actively involved in Proton Beam Therapy trials, as a current IDMC member for PROTIS, a clinical trial of Proton beam therapy vs. IMRT for Sinonasal Cancers.

Dr Gaffney joined the Head and Neck Clinical Trials Team at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London in 2021. He relocated to Manchester, where he completed a Head and Neck Precision Radiotherapy Academic Fellowship at The Christie, using both Proton Beam Therapy and MRLinac technologies. He worked as an Associate PI on the Torpedo trial as well as Investigator Initiated Trials exploring hypoxia detection in Head and Neck Cancer. He was also an active member of the Nasopharyngeal TYA working group and contributed to question writing for the FRCR 2 examination.

Upon completion, Dr Gaffney joined the Hepato-Pancreato-biliary (HPB) SABR service, delivering cutting edge adaptive treatment on the MRLinac. Prior to returning to his native Galway, Dr Gaffney spent time as a Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology at The Christie, treating Head and Cancers.
