Michael Freedman is a specialist Oral Surgeon. He is based at Blackrock Clinic, where he provides services in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Implant Dentistry. Oral Surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes the removal of wisdom teeth, the surgical management of impacted teeth and the biopsy and management of cysts or benign tumours of the mouth and jaws. Dr. Freedman performs the surgical aspects of implant dentistry in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to replace missing teeth and to support dentures or bridges. Bone grafting, sinus lifts and other implant site preparation procedures are often performed prior to implant placement. Zygomatic implants can be used when there is severe bone loss in the upper jaw and when conventional dental implants cannot be placed. Oral Medicine covers the treatment of diseases affecting the lining of the mouth, which may cause mouth pain. These include infections, mouth ulcers, blisters, white or red patches, oral pre-cancerous lesions and oral lichen planus. Treatment for anxious patients is available under intravenous conscious sedation and general anaesthetic. Dr. Freedman is a fully participating provider with VHI, Irish Life, LAYA Healthcare and GARDA Medical.
Dr. Freedman graduated as a scholar of Trinity College Dublin in 2006 with first class honours. Following a year as a House Officer in the Dublin Dental Hospital, he worked in general dental practice in Dublin and provided Oral Surgery services at the Dublin Dental Hospital and St. Vincents Hospital. He completed his specialist training over three years at the Dublin Dental Hospital, where he was awarded a doctorate in Oral Surgery and graduated with the Deans prize. He became a Fellow of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland following his specialist training. He then went on to complete a Masters of Science in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental Hospital, University College London, where he graduated with distinction.
Dr. Freedmans' research interests have investigated the support for zygomatic implants and bleeding disorders. Relevant publications can be found here
