Dr Miriam Kennedy is a Consultant Psychiatrist, specialising in general adult (18 years and upwards) and Later life (Old Age)  psychiatry (65 years and upwards).

Qualified from University College Galway in 1981, she obtained a BSc and PhD in Medical Physiology while teaching and carrying out medical research in University College Dublin, where she set up a teaching development unit as part of her passion for medical education.  She pursued training subsequently in Clinical Psychiatry and holds memberships of the Royal College of Psychiatry as well as the Irish College of Psychiatrists.  The latter awarded her a Fellowship in Psychiatry in acknowledgement of service to psychiatry (roles in professional competence and other areas).  She has held lectureship roles in RCSI and TCD and keeps up her interest in supporting younger members of her profession.

Her interests centre on providing the patient with a biological, psychological and social understanding of mental health and mental illness.  To this end, she pursued additional qualifications in interpersonal psychotherapy, which aids in the treatment of depression in particular.  Along the way, she published in the area of capacity and consent to treatment and human rights.  Her love for music enabled her to incorporate music therapy in her work , as consultant and clinical director in Highfield Healthcare.  Retiring in 2023 from the latter role has enabled her to focus on one-to-one work in her outpatient clinics, albeit on a reduced basis , including  Blackrock clinic.  She is committed to excellence in the care of the patient as a person and further work in helping and understanding mental health and quality of life.
