Originally from Co Monaghan, Dr McDermott is a Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Galway University Hospital and at the Galway Clinic. He is the local training coordinator for specialist registrars rotating through University Hospital Galway. He commenced his consultant appointment in 2023 after completing his fellowship and working as a consultant at the BC Cancer Vancouver Centre, Canada. His main clinical interests include thoracic and gastrointestinal cancers as well as stereotactic radiotherapy for metastatic disease.

Graduated from University College Dublin medical school in 2009. He acquired MRCSI in 2012 before joining the radiation oncology higher specialist training programme in 2013. He became a Fellow of the Faculty of Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2017 before completing his specialist training in 2019.

After completing SpR training, Dr McDermott is dually fellowship trained having spent 1 year as a fellow in Lung Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy with St Luke’s Institute of Cancer Research before moving to Vancouver, Canada to a 2nd fellowship in precision radiotherapy for hepatobiliary tumours and oligometastases at the BC Cancer Vancouver Centre.
