Dr Shamindra Direkze is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist. He graduated from the prestigious MB PhD programme at University College London in 2007 and went on to complete his specialist training in gastroenterology in the London deanery which has included experience in a number of advanced gastroenterology and liver centres including University College London Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital and Kings College Hospital Liver Unit.

On moving to Ireland in 2017, he has held consultant posts in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and most recently St Vincents University Hospital, where he was a registered bowel screening colonoscopist and was a part of the inflammatory bowel disease team based there. He has an interest in advanced endoscopic techniques which includes excision of large colonic polyps/lesions. He has number of publications and prizes from his post-graduate training.

Dr. Direkze is a graduate of the Mb PhD programme from University College London. This allowed him to undertake a PhD with his undergraduate medical training. He completed a PhD in Oncology before returning to complete his undergraduate training. He went to complete his speciality training programme in gastroenterology in the London Deanery which included sub-speciality training in hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital and Kings College Hospital, London. He also completed advanced endoscopic training at UCLH. After moving to Ireland he have worked as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital as well St Vincents University Hospital.

He has completed a PhD in Oncology which was laboratory based research, focused on the molecular mechanisms of how cancers develop. He has published a number of papers from this and has presented his work internationally. From his post-graduate training he has also published papers on luminal gastroenterology and has presented his clinical research in hepatology nationally and internationally.

He undertook a fellowship at University College London Hospital in advanced endoscopic training which included ERCP and EUS. On moving to Ireland, he was a Gastroenterology fellow at the Matermisericordiae University Hospital where he continued to gain experience in advanced endoscopy as well as hepatology training before working as a Gastroenterology Consultant at MMUH.
