Dr Usman Azhar Khan has worked as a Consultant Cardiologist in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He completed his accredited specialist training in Cardiology from Northern Ireland and was awarded CCT by the GMC. He gained complex coronary intervention fellowship experience from University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) in Bournemouth, which is one of the best, competitive interventional fellowship program in UK. He was awarded the UHD star award and was recognized for providing excellent patient care. His expertise are in complex coronary intervention including rotational, orbital and laser atherectomy for modification of calcified coronary lesions. He has a particular interest in intra-coronary imaging including intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography. He has presented his clinical work nationally and internationally at various cardiovascular meetings - Northern Ireland and the Irish cardiac society, European society of cardiology, transcatheter cardiovascular therapeutics and cardiovascular research technologies meetings in the United States of America.
Dr Khan obtained his medical degree from King Edward Medical University in Pakistan.He is a member of the prestigious colleges - Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCPUK) and Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI). He successfully completed Master of Science in Cardiology from Trinity college Dublin in 2021, with a distinction in the interventional cardiology module. He also passed the European Exam in Core Cardiology (EECC).
Dr Usman Azhar Khan has contributed to research activities thorough out his career, particularly in key areas of interventional cardiology during the last 5 years. His high volume interventional cardiology fellowship in Bournemouth was very research driven and he actively enrolled patients in to clinical trials e.g., SELUTION DeNovo study, OPTIMAL LEFT MAIN Study, CHIP BCIS 3 study, DEFINE GPS Study, iCorMicA study. He has first author manuscript publications in the European heart journal – Case reports and abstract publications in Heart BMJ, Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC): Cardiovascular interventions and Irish Journal of Medical Sciences; discussing the role of fractional flow reserve in physiology guided deferral (February 2023), real life use of Impella (mechanical circulatory support device in cardiogenic shock – October 2021), real world experience and outcomes after device led patent formen ovale closure (June 2020) and use of intravascular lithotripsy (shockwave)to treat under expanded stent lesions (February 2019). His dissertation for Masters of Science in Cardiology looked at data for non- ST elevation myocardial infarctions and the factors that were involved in early versus delayed revascularization in this patient cohort affecting overall length of hospital stay for patients.
