I was appointed as a Senior (Specialist) Registrar (SpR) in General Surgery in the Irish training system in 1998. I was awarded the Intercollegiate Examination of the Royal Colleges {FRCSI (Gen. I completed a thesis by research related to neoadjuvant therapy for oesophageal cancer, for which I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) from University College Dublin, also in 2003.
My research interests have centred on the use of minimally invasive surgery in the generality of surgery, to include colorectal cancer management, laparoscopic surgeries, transanal surgeries, minimally invasive gallbladder and hernia surgery. I have a particular interest in daycare and short stay surgical management including direct access endoscopy. I have a particular interest in perianal disease management.
From 2002 to 2003 I was a visiting fellow to Imperial College London and St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. In August 2003, I was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, and as a Consultant Surgeon at St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.
