Mr Ian Pope is a General Surgeon with a special interest in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery. He was first appointed as a Consultant at University Hospitals Bristol in September 2005.
Prior to this he undertook Higher Surgical Training in Edinburgh and was awarded the Gold Medal for outstanding performance in the Intercollegiate Examination of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.
Mr Pope was responsible for the centralisation of Pancreatic and Liver Surgery in the South-West Region of the UK. He has undertaken a number of clinical management roles within the NHS including Lead for HPB Surgery, Patient Safety Lead for Surgery and Clinical Director of Surgery. He served for 3 years on the Committee of the Great Britain and Ireland Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (GBIHPBA) and then five years as Secretary of GBIHPBA, thereby contributing to HPB surgery education and research at a national level.
Mr Pope has now joined the Galway Clinic and brings an extensive experience of managing patients with benign and malignant disease of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreas. He has a special interest in the management of gallstones, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic bile duct exploration. He also undertakes inguinal, femoral, umbilical and incisional hernia repair surgery.
Mr Pope was awarded an undergraduate BA degree in Natural Sciences (Pathology) from the University of Cambridge. He completed his Clinical Studies at Oxford University Medical School.
His basic surgical training was undertaken in Liverpool on the Mersey General Surgery SHO Rotation leading to the award of FRCS. Following this, he undertook a two-year period of full-time research in the University of Liverpool Department of Surgery, completing an MD thesis on gene therapy for the treatment of colorectal liver metastases.
He underwent Higher Surgical Training in Edinburgh on the South East Scotland HST Rotation and completed 4 years specialist training in HPB Surgery and Liver, Pancreas and Kidney Transplantation Surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. This included a 1-year Fellowship Post as Senior Registrar in General, HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery at Flinders’ Medical Centre in Adelaide, South Australia. He was awarded a UK Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and FRCS (GenSurg).
Mr Pope was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in HPB Surgery in 2005 and so brings nearly two decades of experience of providing elective and emergency surgical services in a major UK teaching hospital.

Interests in the multi-modality treatment of colorectal liver metastases, the management of common bile duct stones, liver abscess, the management of neuro endocrine tumour (NET) liver metastases.
