Ms Maedbh Rhatigan is a consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreoretinal surgeon. She was awarded her Undergraduate Medical Degree with Honours from Trinity College Dublin. She completed her Ophthalmic Surgery Higher Surgical Training in Ireland in 2023. She undertook two years of international surgical fellowships in Vitreoretinal Surgery, firstly at Royal Perth Hospital, Australia then at the world-renowned Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia gaining extensive experience in the management of retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, epiretinal membrane (ERM), age related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataract.
In 2024, she commenced her role as a Consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreoretinal surgeon at University Hospital Galway and her private practice in Salthill and the Galway Clinic.
Ms Rhatigan was awarded her Undergraduate Medical Degree with Honours from Trinity College Dublin in 2013. After completing her Intern Year at St James Hospital, Dublin she undertook a Masters through research investigating the role of inflammation in Age Related Macular Degeneration. She then completed Ophthalmic Surgery training in Ireland and the Higher Surgical Training Programme in 2023.
In 2015, Ms Rhatigan was awarded a Masters Degree from Trinity College Dublin for her work on the role of inflammation in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She was also awarded the prestigious Irish College of Ophthalmologists Research Bursary for this research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology and presented nationally and internationally.
