Prof. Clarke was a Consultant Gastroenterologist University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust from July 2001-March 2004 and was also Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medicine, University of Warwick/Leicester School of Medicine. Prof. Clarke is currently Consultant Gastroenterologist, Portiuncula University Hospital and Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Limerick GEMS. Prof. Clarke was Clinical Director, Portiuncula Hospital, Sept. 2009-2011.
Prof. Clarke is a 1992 Medical Graduate of University College Dublin. Prof. Clarke completed basic specialty training in Beaumont and Mater University Hospitals and was awarded the MRCPI in 1994. Prof. Clarke undertook higher speciality training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine in the Mater Hospital and subsequently Post-Doctoral Fellowship training at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. After a three year fellowship, Dr Clarke spent a further year as an Advanced Fellow in Hepatobiliary Disease. Prof. Clarke holds the degree of MD by original research/thesis from University College Dublin (1999), UEMS diploma in Gastroenterology (2000) and was included in the Irish Medical Council Specialist Register in Gastroenterology/ G (I) M in 2001. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002.
