In addition to his private practice at Hermitage Clinic, Prof O’Halloran is a Consultant Neurosurgeon in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. He was previously a Consultant Neurosurgeon in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham specializing in Neuro-Oncology & Neurotrauma. During his time in Birmingham he was also an Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon with the RCDM (Royal Center for Defence Medicine). Prof O’Halloran completed his Neurosurgical training in Ireland in 2019 before commencing fellowships in Toronto, London and Pittsburgh. He has special interests in awake craniotomies, intra-operative monitoring and fluorescence guided surgery, as well as Laser Interstitial Therapy (LITT). He is a key opinion leader in the field of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Neuro-Oncology and is the recipient of numerous awards/grants at an International & National level. He is the principal investigator of the pioneering Rugby Headgear Effectiveness study in collaboration with IRFU & World Rugby. He is an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Neurosurgery and an Independent Match Day Doctor for the English Gallagher Rugby Premiership and European Champions Cup. Professor O’Halloran also sits on the board of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine (RCSI/RCPI). Prof O’Halloran has the unique experience of managing sports related brain injuries in amateur and elite athletes and works closely with the IRFU,World Rugby,GPA and FAI.

Prof O’Halloran was educated at Presentation Brothers College Cork before entering University College Cork. Following completion of his BSc Physiology, he started medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, graduating in 2008. In 2009, he ranked 1st in country in the National Surgical Selection allowing him pursue his career in Neurosurgery. During this time Prof O’Halloran completeda PhD in the molecular biology of high grade brain tumours. In 2023 he became a fellow (FSEM) of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine (RCSI/RCPI). He is a popular mentor for medical students/trainees in clinical and research rotations and was recently selected to take part in the Future Leaders Programme for Surgeons at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Prof O’Halloran has strong academic interests in Neuro-Oncology and Neurotrauma. He is the only Neurosurgeon in Ireland to be awarded a PhD in the field of Neuro-Oncology. In 2017, he was awarded a PhD ( class valedictorian) from RCSI after conducting translational studies at the European Institute of Molecular Imaging in Germany, examining the molecular biology of high grade gliomas using advanced Neuro-Imaging techniques. Prof O’Halloran was principle author and co-investigator of the Beaumont Brain Tumour Biobank and is a visiting Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is the principal investigator of the Rugby Headgear Effectiveness Study which is a leading international study. Prof O’Halloran also has a strong research interests in anticoagulation in TBI and is currently the lead author on the national guidelines on Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in TBI. He has supervised several MD/PhD students in Neuro-Oncology and TBI research projects and is frequently invited as a plenary session speaker at conferences around the world. Over the past decade, Prof O’Halloran has built up excellent working relationships with patient advocacy groups such as Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and Brain Tumour Ireland, sharing a common goal of improving patient care.

In 2020, Prof O’Halloran completed the highly prestigious Neuro-Oncology/Skull Base fellowship at Toronto Western Hospital, becoming the first Neurosurgeon in Ireland with specialized fellowship training in Neuro-Oncology surgery. Following this he was selected as the 1st recipient of the Royal College of Surgeons in England Neurotrauma fellowship at the Royal London Major Trauma Centre, one of the largest trauma units in Europe. In 2021 Prof O’Halloran became the Dan Rooney Concussion fellow in recognition ofthe late Dan Rooney, of the Pittsburgh Steelers and USA ambassador to Ireland during the Obama presidency.
