Private Endocrinology & Diabetes Care at our Dublin and Galway Clinics

You may be referred to an endocrinologist if you are experiencing symptoms related to hormone imbalances, such as weight gain or loss, changes in appetite, fatigue, mood changes, or problems with sexual function. Endocrinologists can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions related to hormone imbalances, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, adrenal gland disorders, and disorders of the pituitary gland.

During your appointment with an endocrinologist, they will conduct a series of tests to determine the cause of your symptoms and develop a personalised treatment plan. This may involve lifestyle changes, such as changes to your diet or exercise routine, or medication to manage hormone imbalances. Your endocrinologist will work with you to ensure that your treatment plan is tailored to your individual needs and provides the best possible outcome. With the right care and support, it is possible to manage and overcome hormone-related conditions and improve your overall health and well-being.

Thyroid conditions at Blackrock Health

Thyroid conditions refer to disorders that affect the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating various metabolic processes in the body by producing thyroid hormones. Thyroid conditions can arise when the thyroid gland produces too much or too little thyroid hormone, leading to a wide range of symptoms and health effects.

Some common thyroid conditions include:

  • Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This can result in symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, and depression.

  • Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces an excess of thyroid hormone. Common symptoms include weight loss, rapid heartbeat (palpitations), heat intolerance, sweating, tremors, nervousness, irritability, and diarrhoea.

  • Thyroid Nodules: Thyroid nodules are growths or lumps that develop within the thyroid gland. While most thyroid nodules are benign (non-cancerous) and do not cause symptoms, some nodules can become large enough to cause difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or visible swelling in the neck.

  • Thyroiditis: Thyroiditis refers to inflammation of the thyroid gland, which can cause temporary hyperthyroidism

Diagnosis and management of thyroid conditions typically involve a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests (such as thyroid function tests and thyroid antibodies), imaging studies (such as ultrasound), and in some cases, biopsy (fine needle aspiration) of thyroid nodules. Treatment varies depending on the specific condition but may include medications, radioactive iodine therapy, surgery, or hormone replacement therapy.
